HISTORY
Midway Plaza has a rich history dating back to its debut in December 1955. It was built by Youngstown developer Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. for $1.5 million and quickly became a popular shopping center due to the new era of suburban life and decentralization. The plaza offered 135,000 square feet of floor space and parking for 1,250 cars, and its first occupants included The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Isaly’s Dairy Store, W.T. Grant Co., and S.S. Kresge. Over the years, Midway Plaza welcomed many businesses, including Miracle Mart, Glamour Figure Salon, Panda Chinese Restaurant, and Jo-Ann Fabrics.
Now, with the new owners’ investment, Midway Plaza has the potential to once again become a thriving community hub. It’s an exciting time for Tallmadge and Akron residents, who are eager to see the plaza’s transformation take shape while also celebrating its storied past.
